Why is Bourbon so Big in Kentucky?
If you ask anyone what Kentucky is famous for, they will most likely say one thing – bourbon. Bourbon is a staple of the Bluegrass State, with Kentucky dominating the distilling of the drink, it produces approximately 95% of the world’s bourbon!
Why is Kentucky the Center of Bourbon?
There are many reasons why bourbon is Kentucky’s pride and joy and will always be the bourbon capital of the world. This can be split into four different categories:
Weather
Kentucky has both extremes of weather, scorching in the summer and freezing in the winter. This is perfect for bourbon. Bourbon is distilled in wooden barrels and the dramatic change in weather impacts them, and they expand and contract with age. This allows the whiskey to seep in and absorb the properties of the wood when it expands, and once they contract this allows the whiskey to flow back out.
Water
Hard water is optimal for distilling, and Kentucky’s water is just this. The minerals are perfect for the yeast in bourbon and help create the crisp Kentucky bourbon taste that is loved across the world.
Rock
Below beautiful Kentucky is a bed of blue limestone, and when water runs through it, it will pick up minerals that add to the flavor. In addition, this blue limestone acts as a filter to get rid of bitter elements.
Soil
Bourbon must contain at least 51% corn, and the fertile soil of Kentucky ensures that the major ingredient effectively grows all over the state.
